    Hi,

I saw this images on internet lately and I am really curious if you can say anything indepth from using it.

I'm also interested in these new CPUs.

Now AMD have increased the TR Pro boost clock to 4.5GHz, it sounds like a good choice, given the option to jump to 24, 32 or 64 cores, compared to 4.9GHz and the 16 cores on the Ryzen 5950X.
It is frustrating that they will only be available in pre-built Lenovo Thinkstations initially.

In my next workstation, I need a good balance of single threaded daily performance in 3ds max, but also quick IPR performance for texturing & image production using Vray CPU.
Bearing this in mind, I'm currently torn between the Ryzen 5950X and Threadripper pro - the Ryzen looks to be a great value workstation, but I fear I'd miss those extra cores when using IPR.

Does anyone have any real world experience with Threadripper Pro CPUs compared to Ryzen 5950X?

Yeah, Thinkstations are really expensive so I am waiting for standard selling too.
But some real experiences would be nice.

        Hi,
I temporarly just switched from 3955wx TR workstation to 5950X Ryzen and I don't really notice any difference in speed. I believe the main difference between them is max RAM and number of support PCIE lanes.

          Thanks Karol.
What made you switch to the 5950X?
Are you talking about render speed or working in 3ds max?

By "temporarly" I meant that I've just built a new workstation for our fresh studio in NY and choosing Ryzen was driven by the budget :P Coming back in few days to the main studio and will be back to Threadripper.

Working and rendering in Maya feels the same as it was with my TR workstation.

Thanks for clearing that up - nice problem to have!

I think I'm leaning more towards the 5950X as I can't keep putting off the upgrade - who knows when we'll see TR Pro 5000 series for sale, outside of Thinkstations...

                Hi Olly,

I have both the 3990X and 5950X in different machines,
On the 5950X's side, the single threaded performance is noticeably better, as it can reach up to 5 GHz on one or 2 cores. This doesn't mean Threadrippers have poor single-threaded performance, it is just that the 5950X is an exceptional CPU today, with great single-threaded performance.
And as mentioned above the 5950X is a great value, it doesn't require any special cooling or expensive boards, as cheap as 200 Euros you can get a good-enough B550 board, it will work fine. On the other hand you will need expensive cooling for Threadrippers, and a good board around 600 Euros at least

On the 3990X side, you can have up to 256 GB of memory and you have a lot of PCIe bandwidth for multi-GPUs up to 7 GPUs on some boards. You get more cores, so the 3990X is about 3x faster than the 5950X in rendering and IPR performance. But this comes at a much higher price, if you care about value then 5950X is great. The IPR experience is also fine, not as good as 3990X or 3970X but still very respectable.

                Best,

Not just expensive, the build quality is not great and they are speced terribly. You will see a 64-core CPU with 2 sticks of memory(no quad channel), which tanks the rendering performance.
I hope the new Threadrippers will be available to consumers soon.
