  • Intel I9 14900K vs. AMD Theread Ripper 2990wx 32/64 for Vray

    Hi

My AMD Setup is over 5 years old and I am trying to decide whether the I9 14900K - will give me the same or better render times. (Single core is almost 2X than the AMD)

Does this mean that the I9 is 1.67 faster ??

    Thanks

    Nir

    Hi nirsul

Yes, the AMD 2990wx is showing its age now. the 14900k should be better in all respects
The difference in everyday tasks will be day and night difference, I used to have the 2990wx a few years back. For rendering with V-Ray, expect nearly 2x better performance

That being said, there are reports of stability issues with the 14900k. You will need to do a Bios update to enfoce Intel limits depending on your motherboard. I think the 7950X Ryzen could be a better choice on stability with a very similar performance to the 14900k, and will run cooler/quieter.

Does it have the number of threads that can give at least the same 2990WX render times ?

      THX !

For rendering, it will give you the same performance of the 14900k, and nearly 2x the performance of the 2990wx, even though it has fewer Cores/Threads. Keep in mind that there are 6 years of technology gap between the Ryzen 7950X and the 2990wx, AM5 is a much better architecture, you will have all 16-cores running above 5 GHz.
On the other hand, the 2990wx the cores run at 3.2 GHz out of box, and it has 2x more cores/threads
Again the 2990wx is showing its age, it was AMD's first try at a high-core count CPU back in the day. The 7950X Ryzen is better in all respects, from someone who owned both CPUs
