though you probably also want to avoid putting it in the slower 4x slot (I'm speculating - maybe 4x is fine for rendering). You'll have to experiment.

x4 Gen 4 should be fine for rendering, I have a 4090 on a very similar setup myself

I just have the 4090 set for rendering device and the 2080 is un checked in Vantage. My assumption was the heat was coming up off the 4090 (heat rises) and into the 2080. The 4090 was only at 66 degrees under full load rendering the 300 frames. I still currently have the 2080 in top and 4090 in second. Got busy over weekend and didn't switch them. I don't render animations very often, but when I do I would like to not have to worry about burning out my old card. The rendering end of Vantage is fairly impressive I must say. Im not sure if I can physically put the 4090 or the 2080 for that matter in bottom slot. Problem is my power supply is at the bottom of case.

Check the temperature of the 2080 again at idle and under load, use GPU-Z to monitor the hotspot and other sensors
Kinda hard for me to believe it runs at 100 degrees C, you need to make sure it is the case

Moving your 4090 to the top slot and the 2080 to the lowermost slot should work as well as last option

2080 at 4% load is 65.9 degrees, 2080 at 89% load is 79.9 degrees. 4090 at 0% load is 37.4 degrees, 4090 at 99% load is 55.3 degrees. The only way I know how to put the 2080 under actual load is to temporarily let vantage use it. I may have a real problem here. I think that vantage is using both cards to render. Every time I go into "render devices" the "automatically select is always on and neither card is selected. If I turn auto select off and select my 4090 it says I have to restart, and when I restart it puts the settings right back the way they were. I just checked a render with gpu-z and BOTH card loads are being cranked up, so I think its using both.

Yup, that is what I thought. If the 2080 is not used for rendering it will not hit 100 degrees

You can check if both devices are being used in the log (Help->Open debug log), somewhere near the beginning it says "using device #". It also shows it in the status bar.

I was able to reproduce this - it is a bug introduced in 2.5.2. You can either use 2.5.1 or create a shortcut that runs "vantage.exe -d 1" or whatever the index of the 4090 is in the log.

Yes, the primary device's memory usage is shown because it uses a bit more than the secondary device. Though the color coding ignores the fact that the second GPU has less memory in this case (in most dual setups the memory size is the same).

The bug will be fixed in the next update.

I guess I dont remember how to add a switch to a shortcut. I have tried adding and doing new shortcut and it wont accept it no matter what I type in. I used to know how to do this, but apparently I forgot.

I am really trying to figure out why I am even running both cards. When I load a scene into Vantage I still have about 20g free vram. The 2080 is at around 5 gpu load normally since it isnt doing much. Is it really advantageous to even run 2 cards given my specs? Eventually (for work) I may have to bring in sites with a lot of civil topography and I am guessing thats going to take more vram probably, but not sure if I will ever cap out my ~20g that I have free now. Thoughts?

Ok, so due to the 2080 overheating I ended up taking it out. I have been just running with the 4090 and things have worked just fine. I know that its just a matter of time though until I really need the 4090 to be a dedicated card, so I ordered a second 4090. I should have it end of next week. Have a couple questions. If I put the new card in the second slot (other one is in top slot) will things still be ok with them being right next to each other? And if I use that config, which slot (top or second) should I use for the monitors? I noticed during rendering the 4090 barely heats up. Certainly nowhere near "hot". Like always, your help is always greatly appretiated.

4090s don't get that hot in rendering, usually 50 degrees C. Let us know how it goes
You can connect your monitors to the topmost card, it will be GPU1

Thank you for your help, highly appreciated.Seems Amazon has raised the price of the 4090. Its now close to $2,100 vs the $1,800 that it used to be.
