    Hi All,

My 3990x pc as been slowly giving up the ghost and today it decide to die. the machine is 5 years old and was build by pc specialist. It is a fancy water cooled setup with EK double radiator one 240 and one 360 so 5 fans and all hard piping, never again am i going to go hard piping as diagnosing and pulling parts is a night mare. Also my gpu is also connected to this loop, making puling out parts to problem solve almost impossible without draining the system I aint giving up on all these components yet, but i need a stable fast machine setup first before i start testing this one for fault, i suspet eithert gcard or mother board are the issue.

my current setup looks like this as u can see, it looks cool but not very practical

So was browsing for cpu options and amazon are seling the 7980x for £2800 which is too good an op to miss so that has been bought . Now i need to build a pc around it, I was wondering what setup people are running? motherboard and ram combos in particular and how these machines have peformed and who stable are they. Looking on scan and overclockers they only seem to list 3 mother boards, asus, asrock and gygabit, is that really all the choice. my last two mobos have been asus and found them to be nothing but fussy about what memory they like to work with. Has anyone else had similar experiances with them?

My initial idea is to keep the chassis, psu and rad setup, except i would flip the top rad so its in and out pipes are on the right and not crossing motherboard, remove gpu from loop and have just cpu connected with flexi popes, basically it will be like a fancy aio with 2 rads that can be easily removed without draining system. I will probs buy a new reservoir and pump while im at it. Pipe arrangement would look more like this

It would be good to hear what peoples expericance are with these processors and what parts any self builders have speced .

    thanks

    Hi Matt,

The 7980X for this price is a pretty good deal! I would upgrade my 3990X if I can get it at this price here.

Here is a good thread to follow, with some people on the 7980X or other Threadrippers
Make sure to buy AMD compatible memory, some kits are certified for Threadripper CPUs. This will be helpful to make the system stable without tinkering too much with memory timings
You need at least 4 memory sticks, as the CPU is quad-channel. On the other hand, if you use all memory slots you might run into issues to make the system stable, this is normal for all new AMD platforms. So if you plan on using all 8 memory slots stay within 5200 Mhz or lower

about stability, it seems people have had stable workstations using this CPU(from the forum thread I posted). That being said with a custom loop, this will complicate the build in your case. If you run into issues post here, many people will chime in to help. I have the 3990X Threadripper, a bit older but still quite similar in many ways.

Yeah, it is a special platform hence there are not a lot of choices.

Talking about the TRX40 platform, the memory issues were universal to all boards not just Asus. I have Asus boards on 4 workstations I have, as I prefer their BIOS and software, I think they work just fine
If you are tired of Asus, then Gigabyte or ASrock for your new workstation are known to make very good motherboards too, make sure to check some reviews.

Personally I would still keep the GPU in the loop, the fact that you went out of your way to liquid cool the build, paying premium and putting this much effort, you might as well include the GPU in the loop to have a silent system. Or give up on liquid cooling all togher and buy a Noctua cooler, you will be able to hear the fans of the Air cooler but it keeps the CPU cool enough, and the noise is tolerable, below 30 dp

    Best,

Hi Muhammed, thanks for you reply, I got really lucky with the 7980x price on Amazon is back up to RRP 4300. Cpu arrived on saturday with all seals in tack. I think I'll stick l with Asus but only the 4 slot motherboard.

ASUS PRO WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI (Socket sTR5/TRX50/DDR5/S-ATA 6Gb/s/CEB)

As for ram I have looked at their QVL and will go for

      G.SKILL Zeta R5 NEO Series (AMD Expo) DDR5 RAM 192GB (4x48GB) 6400MT/s CL32-39-39-102 1.40V

I'll check out the other thread.

      Cheers

      Matt
