    So some interesting things here:

The 4800 is def faster than my i7 920@3.66GHz. But the CPU is behaving as expected, while the GPU is doing some funny things. GI on or off matters for CPU, but not for GPU. Also the environment overrides do not work for GPU, in fact nothing works map wise for the environment other than the main environment slot (ie material environment textures).

This will be a tough one to do; the GPU version relies on the GI to do some of the lighting calculations from area lights (especially for areas close to the lights).

    Yep, coming soon.

My only concern here would be the CPU GPU hybrid mode, certainly getting some weird images when all the settings aren't proper for both cases. So there should be a least common denominator if you are using the GPU.

I was thinking that if the GPU engine is selected, we can cut in the scene translation phase all effects that are not supported on the GPU, so that the CPU version will render them identically.

Ya that would be awesome! It would be as though, at least for the time being, the faster you want to preview things, the less things you will be able to do until they are implemented. But for certain cases this is OK. Then if you need more supported features, you dumb down to just CPU, then for final renders you fire up old faithful.
