Light portals will be done for the GPU as well for the next 2.1 update; for procedural textures we will probably initially add some way to convert them to bitmaps internally.

This would be great, especially if you could cache the bitmaps for subsequent use in the same scene. That way maybe there would only be one really slow set-up time, and after that perhaps the renders would return to near full speed. Does that sound feasible for most materials (like blends and composites) now not supported by RT/GPU Vlado?
