Windows 7 or XP?

    Windows 7 or XP?

    I have been using xp 64-bit for a couple years. 2 stations: dual xeon and core duo 2, both with 4GB ram. I do light duty 3d work, lots of photoshop and wacom tablet works. my system works fine for me and didn't need much expense on upgrades.

    I'm at a point where I want to reinstall my OS, so win7 came to my mind... what's everyone's thought? what are the advantages? any issue with max 2011 and Vray? Thanks!

    I've had more hassle with windows 7 as regards access rights, networking and other issues that I'd happily use xp 64 for everything. Windows 7 is a smoother os and you need it for a lot of the adobe stuff but it's more of a pain in the ass than I want from an OS. It looks pretty though

        Couldn't agree more with joconnell - Windows 7 has been such a pain to set up with networking, permissions, etc, especially with a mixed network of Win XP 32/64bit machines. I'm really struggling at the moment with Win7 64bit and Backburner - BB is just so unstable. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it doesn't and the Manager stops responding after every job and just locks up.

        Anyone had similar problems and found a solution? It's driving me nuts!

          @joconnell - Have you had issues with incredibly slow transfer speeds when copying files from a Win XP machine to a Win7 one? I'm getting times like 9 hours to copy 1.5Gb across! Just copied it to a USB stick from the XP machine and it took 5mins. The problem is well documented online, but no one seems to have a solution.......very frustrating. I'm beginning to seriously regret going over to Win7 on my latest machine. Thanks Microsoft!

            @armilla, that's very slow. I got 130Mps write and 330Mbps read between 2 XP x64. Do you have gigabyte network setup? Perhaps it may ease your pain before they come up with a fix on win7.

              From my perspective, Win7 has been great. I still hate leaving behind XP because like most of you, I know it like the back of my hand. So Win7 takes a bit getting used to, but I'm very happy with it.

              No BB instability, no problem with networking etc.

                @kwok3d: No, I'm going to finally upgrade to a gigabit switch next week and I think I might also try putting a Network card in the Win7 machine as well, incase it's an issue with the onboard adapter. I never used to have problems with a slow network before the Win7 machine was added and I was running the combination of XP 32 & 64 bit.

                Colin: Yeah, there's a lot of things I love about Win7, especially with the interface. However, I've found the whole thing with Permissions across the network to be a complete pain in the ass, but once I got my head around it, that was relatively easily fixed - it's just the slow transfers and BB issues that are driving me nuts at the mo. Hopefully I'll get to the bottom of it before too long!

                  armilla, use "LAN Speed Test 1.1.3" to record the speed before and after upgrade. it'll be cool to see the different. just an exe script, no need to install. I have XP x32 and x64 mixed running and don't seems to affect the speed.

                      I was skeptical about 7 after testing my toes in the Vista market, but 7 has been nothing short of a breath of fresh air. You can turn off a lot of the user right crap if you want.

                      I would even buy it a drink if they would remove the damn round corners on the windows, but the is an aesthetic thing, and not related to performance.

                        Well regardless of whether you like it or not I think XP's days are numbered. So I feel it's a good investment to start working through the issues in Win7. I found this script (Grant admin full control) very useful. You just right click a file or folder and the user rights crap is gone.
