  • New System

    The last time i built a system was a while ago and was a quad core Q6600 system with 8 gigs of ram and i was able to keep the cost under $1300 USD. is it still possible to build a system at those kinda prices that would be any where near usable level? (for rendering)

    add a good gpu = £ 250
    psu = £60
    hdd = £50- £250 (depending if you can afford an SSD as system drive)

    case (could use your old one or get a cheap one for £50..)

    total £1000 - £1200 for a beast of a system.

    ah.. hehe, us dollars.. hmm the direct price conversion doesnt look good, but then things usually cost the same in usd as in £.. we get ripped off here.

    you could shave £200 off that by going for a less meaty bundle..

    basically you can definitely get a usable system for under $1300..

    assuming you dont want to include monitor, keyboard and stuff in that price?

              Nothing wrong with that build. Is this going to be your main workstation or a node?

              I like ASUS MBs but saved about $50 going with a MSI this time. Also saved on graphics card and went with an Antec Three Hundred case for about $50. And no SSD.

                initially i was thinking a render node but then decided ill stick my Q6600 as a node and make this a work station

                  Aha, I'm gonna build my new system as well, maybe we can share some info? Take a look at my thread:
                  http://www.chaosgroup.com/forums/vbu...649#post526649

                  As for your spec, I usually go with lower end motherboard to save some money for RAM and graphics card, that isn't much $$ tough

                  Btw, are you gonna get a better cooling for your CPU? I'm not sure how much it helps, but mine is attached with Corsair H50 and it keeps the OC 2600k @ full speed overnight cool in a closed room without fan/aircon.
                  i7 2600k (OC), 16GB RAM, Geforce GTX560Ti, Win7pro, 3dsmax 2012

                    i was wondering about swapping out the heatsink on the chip for something higher end. the system will be run in an AC room all the time
