...And the biggest problem with this is that nVidia is getting like zero competition in the GPU rendering field (at least as far as Vray is concerned), which could very likely see them putting an even a bigger premuim on their GPU boards that are efficient renderers.

I'd happily pay around 1000$ for a 1500-2000 core 3-4GB board that renders like a Fermi-based board, but a 3000-4000$ "high end CAD card", please, no!

Is there a viewport benchmark available? If it is a few times better than a GTX580 or 680, I'll go for the 7970 and Vray RT CPU.

I did, but still no change - the driver crashes. The guys at AMD are looking into it.

tried with the latest 12.9 Beta 9/26/2012 driver vrayRT openCL - crashes
with the blender cycles openCL - crashes
when I compare viewport performance to my 2yr old quadro fx3800, the hd 7970 seems to me slightly slower

A friend PMed me about him having success with RT GPU and 12.10 drivers running on HD7950.
Did not read anything about that here, so I wish I could confirm those great news...is it true?
Does VRay RT GPU at last work with OpenCL and those GCN beasts?

We did a quick test here with the 12.10 drivers; the 7970 card worked for simple tests with not bad performance for the official 2.30 builds, but video driver crashed for more complicated scenes. The 5970 card didn't work at all.

Guys, the reports for the 12.10 driver were mixed, but now more ppl report success with VRay RT GPU and 79xx cards using the latest 12.11 beta.
Any more official tests on that? And some rendering times for the default test scene?
