is it worth getting new workstation based on 2 xeons?

Is it worth putting together new workstation based on 2 Xeons on EVGA Classified SR-2 (Super Record 2) mainboard? http://www.evga.com/products/prodlis...eries%20Family
And if it's good idea to go with Xeons what is the best bang for buck for two?
Or better for this price to get few more pc's on 2011 socket?

It depends what u want to use it for.

For SLAVE = NO
For Workstation = YES

I have it for workstation running 4ghz&48gbram&ssd/raid/etc etc
But in ur place I would w8 for SR-X 2011 and get 2x 8core xons =D 32 threads :]

XEONS are great - apparently. But I think they are way over priced
Rather get the new i7 Gulftown (6 core = 12 hyperthreaded)
or wait for 8 core i7

Xeons dont lag and deal with memory differently. They also have more bit when it comes to deal with memory and so on than i7, and yea they are very overpriced but with EVGA and OC they as good as i7's

8 core ones will be over 1K $ So x2 2k just for CPUs ... is it really worth it!? I'm talking workstation only!

U really have to wait for them to get out as well as SR-X and check SR-X forum to find out that mate. Consider the type of work u do and see if u really need it. If u do heavy jobs and multi task a lot 16 core at 3.5 ghz should get the job done in no time... I know I'll get them once the right time will come :]

I concur with DADAL. Before you put that much cpu power onto the main user workstation, it is in your best interest to really analyze what type of workload you are going to throw at it. Just as a for instance you could get a 4 core 2600K chip @ 3.4 ghz for $260 in a workstation (same exact sandy bridge architecture) and then put the rest of the money into a dedicated render slave which you turn on and off when you don't need it. Just a thought. The new e5 chip seems to be absolutely the best solution for rendering, while maintaining superior single threaded performance over AMD. I must say I am very jealous as I am eyeing these new chips

and would it be still smart (well money spent) getting 2x 6 core e5 xeons( price is around 700$ so a bit better) over i7 ?

I used to have several dual Xeons over the years. While their performance will last a while (usually 2 years before regular processors match the speed), it's more immediately cost-effective to go for an X79 system. It's the difference between spending at least $5,000 or $2,000.

You might want to invest the extra into a nice graphics card like a 580-590 GTX. I'm very impressed with my i7 and X79 systems presently. I'm running an ASUS P9X79 Deluxe at the moment:

In any case I think a good 8 core single board OC to 5ghz would do the trick for few years... ! Good luck

The 8 cores E5 are out, problem is they seem to have locked multipliers, so no OC. A decently clocked one (±3ghz) will set you back around *gasp* 2000$...
