I went through all of the options last year and decided to build my own box to run Nexentastor with ZFS. Those pre-built systems are easy to get going, but offer very little room for expansion and their processors/internals are typically sh*t.

I think my whole project came in under $1400 using a Supermicro board with a Xeon 3600 series and 8GB RAM, mirrored boot drives, mirrored 32GB SSD ZIL drives, a 32GB SSD for L2ARC and 8TB of storage. You can make something much smaller for cheaper depending on your requirements, and the Nexentastor software is free up to 18TB of used storage.

I have a Netgear Readynas NV+ at work and its shit. Ok its small, and it did cost less than a server, but its extreamly slow and it makes 10 times more noise than my workstation. This model is not very user friendly either, it basically has one button which does different things based on how long you press it. (!)

It does have a nice raid system though. I use 4 disks and if one fails all the data is still there on the others. Simply replace the broken disk with a new one and all the data is copied to it automatically. But im sure you can make this raidsetup yourself if you know what youre doing.

I would recommend buildning your own small server instead. Thats what I will do next time I update my hardware.
