  • Affordable Six-Core Procs: 3930k Sandy Bridge 3.2GHz vs 980 Gulftown 3.33GHz

These two procs are extremely similar in (stock) speed and price (at the moment) and fit the budget I am trying to stay within. But of course there are plenty of other differences. Would anyone care to comment on which one might be more appropriate for a Vray workstation and why?

I have my own ideas but would love to see what other folks are thinking...

Thanks very much in advance for any comments!

3930k on x79 chipset is much faster. Forget the 980.

    - Go with a 8x Dimm board, stuff it with 8X8GB
    - Put a corsair h100 cooler on top and go for 4.5GHZ or more.

    CPU 3930k 500€
    Board ASUS P9X79 WS 300€
    RAM 64GB 2x PGQ332G1333ELQK 380€
    Cooler Corsair H100 100€
    Power Supply Enermax ERV850EWT Revolution85+ 200€
    SSD 240GB Adata s511 300€
    HDD 2TB Seagate ST3000DM001 150€
Case Fractal Design Define R3 90€
    Graphic Gainward GF GTX 580 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-E 450€

    = That's what i call a dream rig for around 2500€

Yeah, that does sound pretty dang nice. Thanks very much for your reply.

Do you happen have (or have seen) actual Vray benchmark rendering times comparing the two? I'd love to know exactly how much faster the SB is while rendering...

Sushidelic...is that anytihng like a sushi-holic? That would describe me pretty well!

      Thanks again,

      -Alan

if I had the cash for a new rig, I would also choose the 3930k.
And as much as it pains me to say this, but after supporting and being a strong believer in ATI Cards for MANY YEARS, I'm seriously considering switching to NVidia for my next pc

              Hi Alan,

We run a lot of 2600k here, oc'ed at 4.4GHZ they pretty much render exactly as fast with vray as a 980x oc'ed to 4GHZ, so my guess is 3930k will be around 20-30% faster (6 cores compared to 4 in 2600k)

Sushidelic was an ambient/lounge style album by an artist called "sushi club", that's where the nick comes from. But that doesn't distract me from killing 40-50 maki if it needs to be done .

              Best regards,
              Michael

X79 supports 64GB, which is great and the biggest improvement over the 68 family.

HA! Just last night some 3-D buddies and myself almost wiped out the local fish monger - It's just the best food I've ever eaten...
