  • Need Help with decision...

    Dear community,

I am finally ready to update my last workstation and am at a point I could use some of your advice.

Basically, I am looking at 3 choices.

    1) E5-2650 (8 core) cost = +117 USD

    2) E5-2640 (6 core) cost = +102 USD

    3) i7 6-core 4.5 cost = +89 USD

    4) i7 6-core 3930K = ?tbd

    Thanks!

Hard one, it depends will u OC?

U have to look at motherboard too, I suggest EVGA as they offer best warranty and so on.

Also consider checking multipliers of each CPU if they are locked, and see OC forums to get details about performances...

Well, I would OC it if it needed it, but never have so far...
EVGA seems to be a highly recommended MB, too. Have been looking at the X79 Classified and the SR-X.

Workstations are hard one... they require a lot more attention to detail than desktop pc.

In any case if u going with 2 cpu per mobo the only way to OC them is EVGA, so go get manual from EVGA and vendor list of approved parts that work with this motherboard. Ur ram, cpu and other components has to be listed in order to work with EVGA.

Also EVGA has silly issues here and there, so read forum and post there ! It might not work with all the stuff u want to put in it - for example SR-2 had disappearing ram which had to be tweaked b4 it could work 100%...

          Whats ur budged?

Yes, will definately read up more on MBs and etc.
Budget is sort of flexible, but ideally targeting 2-3k (USD) if possible, but will go above if need be
