If we were to upgrade our workstation cards to something certified for Max2013, which is essentially a Quadro card, would RT GPU be able to use the GTX cards that we would then put into our rendernodes?

don't waste you money.
Quadro is not certified for Max 2013. Max Nitrous driver doesn't support Quadro's mysterious features.
I have three Quadro at my office, then I purchased only GTX580s 3GB. These boards are faster than Quadros 6000 (for gpu computing).
regarding networked gpus Vray-RT is the only software on the planet that supports networked Cuda rendering. It works.

Although Vlado can answer definitively, since RT Distributed Rendering is 100% TCP/IP based, as long as your DR rendering slaves are seeing their GPUs properly I'm hoping that the slaves should be able to work regardless of whether or not the client machine has another type of card. Vlado?
