  • new GPU advice please - future for Radeons in vray GPU or not?

    Hello!

I'm planning to buy a new gpu in the ~400$ range.

So my choices are nvidias' gtx 570 (I found a EVGA 2560MB model for 400$) or the 3 gb radeon 7950 for a bit more.

Most computing tests show the supremacy of Radeons (up to 2x faster), but what I'm reading in this forum is that they are not functional in Vray GPU at all? Is that a driver / openCL issue? Or does ATI not care about fixing it / intentionally cripples this functionality? Or are there chances that it will be fixed?

    Regards,
    Thomas

It looks more like a driver issue since it is the driver that crashes even before any code gets to be executed on the GPU.

Were the Radeons always like that, or did it start with some driver version?
If it was always the case, we can probably assume that it won't be fixed...
Or are you trying to work around that bug? I've no idea about programming, but people are using ATI cards for computational tasks, so maybe it's possible after all?

Well, it used to work for a moment with a particular driver version, but then broke again.

We can't really work around the bug since I have no idea what's causing it or how to avoid it.

The V-Ray RT GPU code is probably one of the most complicated pieces of OpenCL code that you can find; I'm well aware that simpler kernels run fine, but that's not the point - our code will get even more complicated as we add more features.

        Best regards,
        Vlado

          Thank you for the answer!

I guess I'll just get a nvidia card then.

It's all you really can do for now, I guess. But go for the 3GB 580. The prices are coming down into your range and we're talking 512 Fermi cores for a very reasonable price. More cores=faster GPU rendering.

The 570 has 480 cores, and the 2,5 gb version is 100 EU cheaper than the 3gb 580 (in my country). So it still makes economical sense to get the 570... But thanks for the advice!

Ah, so the 580 has not come down that far yet there...
