  • Poor performance with dual Xeon E5-2630

    Hi,

    i recently got a new workstation at work. It's Dell Precision T5600 with dual Xeon E5-2630. I ran some tests, and in comparison with my previous single processor i7 2600k at stock speed, performance gain is barely 25% which just does not seem right.

    I have already tried disabling multithreading and disabling bitmap paging in 3ds Max (which turned out to be disabled all along), but nothing helped. I am clueless...

    Is there any problem, or is it that performance of Xeon E5-2630 is THAT poor?

    (I have also tried other, Embree based renderer and the performance of this dual Xeon was even 50% slower than i7 2600k. Although in Vray, i am not using embree helper)

    You can email us to vray@chaosgroup.com and ask for access to the nightly builds - they might help for some of the issues.

    Other than that, just disable the Bitmap Pager (*not* multithreading in general).

      well that will also depend on your clock speed of the xeon processor vs the clock speed of your previous i7. I have an i7 clocked at 4.5 ghz and the 4 physical (8 logical cores) that it has outperform in some cases my 24 core (logical) 2.6 ghz xeon.

        If you would read my post carefully, you would notice i mentioned that i7 2600k ran at stock speed

          I did read your post, i7 stock speeds can vary so can the speeds of the xeons. In any case I was just making an example.

            Well, i have not seen i7 2600k ever clocked at anything else than 3,4Ghz, that's the stock speed btw. And according to some benchmark, one Xeon E5-2630 should be slightly faster than i7 2600k at stock speed, let alone two of them.

              Ok, got the latest nightly build...

              Tried it on scenes with both heavy instancing and no instancing at all, and getting pretty much consistent results, about 20-30% performance boost compared to i7 2600k @3,4Ghz...

              So nothing changed with nightly build

                Ok then; we have a machine here with dual Xeon E5-2680 at 2.7 GHz, which I would assume is somewhat close. Can you get me the scene that you are testing with to vlado@chaosgroup.com ?

                  I will have to ask my boss if i can share the scenes, because they are confidential and contain some copyrighted models. Otherwise i will have to create some scenes to illustrate the issue.

                  By the way, i found out that the machine is rigged with ECC memory sticks. Could that be a problem?

                    Could that be your render bucket size too big? Since you have dual Xeon it might be good to make the render bucket size smaller to make good use of all the cores.
