  • 64gb ram benefits

    Hello friends,
as topic suggests, I would like to know if it's worth getting 64gb ram, if so - in which cases.

    Many thanks,
    Radomir

Definitely if you're going to do VFX stuff, as simulations in either thinking particles, phoenix or fume really benefit from having lots of ram. In terms of vray it means way more geometry or large textures and also very large final image sizes which is handy for print stuff.

The more ram u get the less lag u get and less issues in ur workflow. Basically more better. I would run 128 if I did not max out my slots already

            Friends,
I am little bit struggling with choosing two setups, for around the same price:

            1) 3930k + 64gb ram
            2) 3770k + 32gb ram + gtx670 4gb

            My current setup is q6600@3ghz + 8gb ram + hd5850 1gb

Im doing mainly heavy detailed landscape and traffic visualization (30x60km landscapes, populated with foliage via ForestPro, thousands of cars and such...), and a litlle bit detailed of interior viz. I posted question on itoo forums about utilizing 32/64gb ram, and mr. Quintero replied:
me: Just one more question - can you roughly estimate (if possible) the scale of forest objects, or polycount, which could populate 32/64gb ram via FP?
mr. Quintero: It is very difficult to estimate those values, because is not as simple as multiply the size of the tree for the number of items. Also that depends also of the render engine. We suggest not use more than 4 to 5 millions of items with VRay and 500k for Mental Ray, but only for efficiency reasons. Over these limits, the scattering and render times would grow exponentially.

Anyway, with 5 millions of items, probably you will get more plants that pixels at screen... and it is not needed much memory to get this density (probably about 3Gb using a unique plant model of 1 Million of faces).
I know this is about FP and rough estimation, so I'm thinking to get "less power" with build #2. What do you think ?
