  • H100 Cooler position inside case? Which case?

    Hi all

OK so if I decide to go for the H100 cooler for my 3930K, is the only place to mount it at the top of the case? Since it has 2 X 120mm fans, it cant be mounted at the back since usually there is only space for 1 X 120mm fan because the graphics card is in the way?

Whole bunch of things to consider here. Was going for stock air cooler, but turns out you'll have problem fitting it since the RAM's heatsinks are too high. Therefore seems the H100 is the way to go. But now have to decide on chassis...

Also I'm worried about noise levels from the 2 X 120 fans from the liquid cooler!

I'd certainly go for a full tower case. I know we have struggled a bit to get the H80i inside our case (a Fractal Design R3). Do Corsair themselves recommend a case? Our workstations use Corsair Carbide 500R cases. Whilst we do not use water cooling in these, there seems to be room in the top of the case for a water cooling system such as the H100. Check it out:-

That case looks nice, except I dont like the white sides

If I'm not planning on pushing the CPU above 4Ghz, do I really need the H100, can I go for something like the H80 or even H60 instead?

Currently my main PC has an Antec P190 case
In the past I also had Raidmax gamer chassis with 5 X 80mm fans, those were VERY noisy
I also had a cheapo CoolerMaster Centurion 590 case, but that pc was the most silent pc I ever had...

We think they look like storm troopers!
I'm sure you can get them in black too.

Our new test render box has the same processor with the H80i cooler and it is overclocked by about 35% or so. When it starts rendering, it is quite noisy even with a sound absorbing case like the fractal design R3. It could be because of the fan placement (we had to put one of the H80i fans at the bottom of the case and only one attached to the rad because of our large RAM heatsinks). We are building another couple the same over the next couple of days, so we will see if they are the same. The H80i keeps the CPU at around 70-72 degrees when it is maxed out on a render job.

Oh ok good to know. I thought the RAM heatsinks is only an issue for the aircoolers directly on top of the CPU. Geuss I misunderstood previously. Because the H100 has limited case support and I wont be overclocking "that much" I'm now looking at the H80i also. But this historically "simple" excersise of building a new pc is very quickly starting to turn into brain surgery

Why don't you get Vengeance LP 8GB modules? We use them here in all workstations and rendernodes with NH-D14 and Thermalright Archon coolers. Also kingston has some HyperX low profile modules too.

Hmmm the Fractal Design R3 looks almost the same as my current "silent" Antec P190 case. The Antec also has sound absorbing material, but when those fans kick in, it sound like an airplane.
I like the idea of going for Corsair case, RAM and PSU. And yes seems that Carbide does come in black. I hope my local supplier can get hold of these...

Yes I've been putting Kingston Ram in all my PC's for the past 10 years. This time I want to see what the Corsair's do

Just finished building another one of these machines using lower profile vengeance ram (slightly slower speed I think). The H80i works a treat. Fits properly. Overclocking easily by 35%.

I take it then that the low profile RAM will just get a bit hotter than the others and maybe run slightly slower if you even notice a speed difference?

Just remove those useless ram heatsinks (google it) and go for a Noctua air cooler.
Read a test once (been a while, dont remember where) but ram sticks actually ran hotter with the heatsinks on...

The problem with using a big air cooler that weights in around 1kg on a mobo and a pc that gets moved often, is that you increase the chances of damaging the mobo?

We did have a timid attempt at removing the heat sinks but gave up. Perhaps a hairdryer would help, or rest them on a radiator for a few minutes.

That might be a problem indeed.

I've got that Noctua and move my pc around more than most - never had a problem

(glad I found your thread I'm about to do exactly the same - my first time to overclock, since so many others do it !).

Going for i3930k, P9X79 Pro, 32gb, and probably will now have to go for a new case (Corsair Carbide 400R), and the H100i and fitted with quiet fans throughout.

Some great YouTubes by Asus on this very subject.
