  • RT GPU in production render Crashes Max 2014

    Hello,

Just an FYI for the latest stable nightly builds. When using RT in in production mode (I was testing a small simple animation). It renders the first frame out fine and then crashes the video card driver on the next frame every time. I even rolled back a few drivers and same issue appears.

    Max Design 2014
    (4) Nvidia GTX Titans.

I also tried the "make V-ray animation preview" under the rendering pull down and it just renders the first frame even if I set it to 100. I've always noticed this feature doesn't work even in Max 2013 or I'm probably doing something wrong...does anyone know how to use this feature?

    Thanks!

    ***Update***

I've figured were the problem is coming from It's on some of the materials. I had some mix maps with procedural noise in them, normally RT GPU just doesn't render them and that is fine, however, when you render a sequence with the production render it renders the first frame then crashes the video card drive then V-ray requiring to terminate and re-start the application.

I removed the mix maps with procedural noise and the problem is gone...I hope these procedural map issue gets ironed out before the final SP release.

Too late unfortunately If we had the report last week, we would have been able to fix it. But the SP builds are ready now and we are terribly late as it is to pull them back. We'll fix it in the stable builds though.

Thanks for the update Vlado...I will look out for the next stable build.

Does the "make V-ray animation preview" work? I cant seem to get it to render past one frame.

Doesn't work for me either; will make a note to look into this too.

Hi, I can't reproduce the crash here.
Is it possible for you to send a scene at support@chaosgroup.com ?

Sure...It's a larger file I will send it via yousent-it.
I also found that the stable nightly from Saturday corrupt some materials. I saved the project back 2013 to continue working, after about saving 10 iterations of the file this morning I could not open any of those files again and there autobacks as well. it would just crash max on start-up. Traced it back to one objects material.

Very frustrating...I'm staying away from 2014 for now.

Have you already sent the scene to us ?
You could also send us one of those corrupted files and another not-corrupted one for investigation.
Would it be possible to inform us about the exact name of the Vray Build that you have used ?

I sent the scenes with issues and additional info this morning.

I am experiencing this too in 3ds Max 2012 and latest V-Ray release 2.40.04. It some times renders 100 frames and then crashes or it renders 5 frames and then crashes. No consistency, some times restarting my PC helped.

We had the eyepiz scene and I think we have solved this issue, but it is not yet in the builds.

Other than that, my experience with the GPUs is showing that they tend to become less-stable when using CUDA/OpenCL for a long period of time, because of over-heating. It is good idea to look at the GPU temperature.
But if it crashes on the same frame over and over again we will be glad to take a look at the scene, it might help a lot for finding if there is something wrong at out side.

Doesn't crash on a specific frame, could be as you mention to do with a heavy load on the GPU. I monitor temperatures and I don't have them going about 60 degrees C, AFAIK the GTX 690 doesn't start throttling until 70 degrees.

                        Hi James,

Maybe you can supply a scene to test it here?

In simple test with Max 2014/V-Ray 2.40.04/RT CPU/GPU and scene with animated teapot, "Make V-Ray RT Animation Preview" option works fine for me.
Could you try with "Max. paths per pixel" set to 50?
