  • Intel Core i7-4770K Any good for vray?

I was just taking a look at the Intel Core i7-4770K chips V's i7-3930K about £100 cheaper here in the UK but the 4770k only has 4 cores where the 3930k 6, I think I will go for the 3930k but the below review was interesting?

I guess they are not using all the threads for the vray test maybe?

In french so I think this should give you it in english via google translate:

Without reading too much about the new cpu series if you compare 39xx 6 core vs 47xx 4 core then the 6 core should be faster.

Been doing alot of research....so far this is what I've gathered:
      3930k-
      1. "easy" to overclock, unless you've got 64gb of ram (vs 16gb or 32gb)
      2. runs much cooler than haswell, specially at oc speeds.
      3. Hexacore
      4. Older tech. Though surprisingly, most motherboards not specifically made for this cpu. Must often update bios.
      4770k-
      1. Does not overclock as much.
      2. Runs hot as f#@$, especially overclocked. (Hot as f#@$ is good only for girlfriends)
      3. Less cores, but faster single-thread apps.
      4. Newer tech.

Somewhat difficult to come to a conclusion, due to the fact that info on 4770k+vray hard to come by.
Also being a retardus doesn't help. Hopefully, someone less retardus will chime in.

I think I will agree with you retardus(nice nick). Old tech is better in this case. Unless there are some VT etc etc new weird functions that would benefit.

I must disagree with retardus about 3930k overclocking with 64gb ram. I have sabertooh x79 and rampage iv extreme running at 4.7ghz 24/7 with corsair vengeance lp 8x8gb modules. Though I have a friend who can overclock only up to a 4.2ghz on Asus P9X79-WS with 64GB. So this issue might be motherboard specific.

Anyway I'd go for 3930k for main workstation.

I did the same evaluation as retardus and bought four 3730k's overclocked to 4.1 Ghz for our farm. The 6 core gives a lot more bang for your buck.

I agree w/ your disagreement w/ me. That overclock is super impressive!
Being that the ram is low profile, am I correct in assuming you are using the massive Noctua DH14 cooler.
Also, it seems that ram frequency must be lowered considerably in overclocked 64gb systems. So I guess no point in dishing for 1600mgz + ram?
