  • high cpu load

i am experiencing high cpu loads when using rt gpu. i suppose its the chunks of data that are transferred to from the gpu.
gpu monitor shows a more or less jagged line, not 100% all the time but way less.
anyway i am using octane as well and there everything runs just as expected.
is there a way for vray to automatically adjust performance settings?
i suppose that can be calculated better then my trial error.
or at least for production rendering ?
or maybe a slider responsive to fast?

    best, andreplx

High CPU load is something usual if the rendered scene is too heavy. The CPU in RT rendering is used to send the information to the GPU which is responsible of the actual rendering and its usage depends on the size of the project. If the CPU usage is near to its limits then some lower GPU utilization could occurred.
Unfortunately we do not have automatically performance adjustment settings and these settings must me tweaked manually.
These are Ray bundle size (if you are using distributed rendering) and Rays per pixel - you may try to increase or decrease these parameters in order to optimize GPU-rendering.

As Svetlozar mentioned, try increasing the Ray bundle size and/or the Rays per per pixel and see if it helps. 256/16 usually works well if your GPU can handle it.

When I'm using RT GPU I've noticed that the CPU load for vray.exe hovers around the 30%. My Quadro 4000 only has 256 CUDA cores, if I add a more powerful GPU card like a Titan would the CPU load increase?

Nope; at least with the Titan that I have here, the CPU usage is around 25-30%.

Thanks Vlado, that's good to know.

On my gpu rig here, with 4 GTX680 the cpu load is between 40 and 80%, sometimes a bit more, but luckily, it never hits the 100%, which means that if it did, my cpu would bottle necking the gpu render, I guess...
