  • LGA-2011 I7 3930K Alternative?

I have two systems which run 3930Ks. Both boards from ASUS.
One of the processors is dead, so the spare computer is just sitting there. I've been meaning to get a new processor for it for well over a year.
I just checked the 3930K processor prices and they're still very high - ~$500.

According to the ASUS website, one of my boards with the latest firmware updates can actually run the latest Xeons. However, I think I'd be missing some functionality like ECC and of course cannot run dual (since it's a single CPU motherboard.)

So my question is since I've been out of the hardware loop for close to two years - do you have any suggestions for a new processor?
Is it worth spending $2500 on the latest Xeon and giving my other dead comp the current 3930K that's working?
Is there another LGA-2011 that's low in price yet comparable or better?
Or should I just save my money and add a Titan to my current comp which already has a 590 GTX?

I don't completely trust independent benchmarks because people tend to OC their systems with ridiculous things.

3930 will eat alive any 6 and maybe even 8 core xeon.

Dadal is being a little over dramatic in his response.

We have both in our office, the 3930 is a solid performer, but it definitely is not faster than our 8 core Xeons both at stock speeds.

Now if you are talking bang for buck performance, the 3930 is the clear winner.

For your situation, I would stick with the 3930 processor and get a decent 7 series nvidia card and call it a day. The Titan is a little salty for the performance or lack thereof in certain situations.

I have dual 4 core xeon oc clocked at 3.8 ghz and 3930 with gentle clock at 4.0ghz. The 3930 is 1-5% faster than my xeon... I think the ram speed difference and architecture do make the 6core quite good vs e5530+oc

Ah...that makes a lot more sense!

I'm looking at my machine which is a dual Xeon E5-2690 and it's pretty stout. Much improved tech there.

As per the OP, I think for the money he is best of going with the 3930 and a GTX 760 and be done with it. Keep saving pennies for the next big computer.
