  • What MB for my new workstation?

    Hi guys,

I am about to buy a new workstation. Actually I almost did... but it turns out that I am not able to use 64 GB DDram (Kingston HyperX DDR3 8x 8GB 2400MHz XMP CL11 Beast) in the motherboard that I choose (MSI X79A-GD65 8D)! It sounds ridiculous, but the seller told me that if I want Kingstone 2400MHz DDRAM then I can use only 4 slots (32G DDRAM). Should I believe him ?

Anyway, my questions is: what is the best MB for my workstation wiht 64 DDRAM? (in some reasonable price like MSI X79A-GD65)
    Specs:
    CPU: i7 3930K
    DDRAM: Kingston HyperX DDR3 8x 8GB 2400MHz XMP CL11 Beast - 64 GB
    GPU: GeForce GTX 780 EVGA

    What do you think?

Love my Asus Sabertooth X79. Has been rock-stable with the same processor and 64gb ram.

Do you have 64GB DDRAM with 2400Mhz?

Second the Asus Sabertooth X79! It's the heart of 4 machines in the office. Great board.

To get the memory to run @ 2400 you will need to setup the motherboard to run in XMP mode or something like that. Otherwise it will default to 1600. I'm not in front of one of those machines to check, but it was a simple setting which basically does a simple overclock. (Again, all from memory)

I have both a X79 and a PX979. Both fantastic and solid boards.
However, I've noticed incorrect temp reportings coming from their AI Suite Probe and Fan Xpert. Just don't install that software and you should be golden.

Regarding the Sabertooth X79 - did you guys install the fan in the i/o panel? That little fan makes a really annoying hum/buzz... I build a machine and left that fan out, hopefully it's not super necessary unless you've got the panel packed with stuff plugged in.

cheerioboy - I'm super sensitive to noise and that fan was too loud for my tastes so I unplugged it. System's been going strong for two years now.

baastyan - Mine are at 1600, which is what they're rated at. But my CPU is OCed to 4.2GHz. I have a feeling I could overclock either the CPU or RAM much more, but I need total stability.

One can always get faster or larger fans and choose to throttle them down if necessary. Hard to go the other way around.

Thanks for your feedback guys! Eventually I have installed my 8 x 8 GB DDRAM and it works succesfully at 1600MHz (MB X79). It is OK for now but I will try soon to run my MB in XMP mode (as Donald2B suggested). Let you know if I can run DDRAM at 2400MHz.
