  • Any video demos of RT for high end archviz interiors

We have dipped our toes into RT over the years but have always had issues with it not supporting some of the key textures/plugins we use. However, assuming we could work around these issues, I'd be very interested in seeing a video demo of RT GPU being used in the high end interior field. We see lots of examples of cars and 3D characters, but it bares no resemblance to what we are working on - lots of lights, lots of 'closed' spaces, lots of bounced light and GI.

It would be great if Chaosgroup could show us just what is possible with RT in a system with 1, 2, 3 or even 4+ high end GFX cards. It will then help us to decide if we should make a switch.

I suppose I could supply a typical scene to Chaosgroup for testing if required.
    Kind Regards,
    Richard Birket

I think, specifically for interiors, it will be a lot more useful when we release a version that supports the light cache (this is already working in our internal builds). So far in my tests, BF+Light cache in the production renderer always beats the brute force only GPU.

      Hi Vlado!

Would Irradiance map be coming to GPU as well? This would be a major breakthrough in high end archviz interiors.

Well; I was hoping to not have to redo the irradiance map It would only make sense if we find a way to compute the map itself on the GPU and this is a bit tricky with our current approach.

When you say internal do you mean the nightlies? Because I have a recent nightly installed and I noticed that with Light Cache enabled in my production (Vray normal) settings that my activeshade GPU says 'building light cache' in the console. I had sort of wondered if a biased version of GPU had been introduced...

Yes, the 3.x nightly builds only.

What 3.x nightly build is this on?...O only see the 3.0 stable builds "vray_adv_30007_max2014_x64_24716" and I don't see LC in GPU.

I don't know if this can help, but those are renders that I did a bit more than a year ago :
Quick tests : opening the scene, rendered, exported

                https://vimeo.com/67693484
                https://vimeo.com/67693483

Average of 45 min a frame on 4x gtx 680.
it's pretty noiseless and in 1920.
Vimeo compress and downscale quite a lot so those links are not really reflecting the truth.
If wished, I could try to dig the original renders out somewhere.

Although I would be interested in trying to do the same with a new scene.
If someone can get me one, I will be happy to try out, got 780 Ti now

                Cheers

Is it implemented in maya nightlies 3.0 by any chance?

Yep, got the same issue here,
I was looking for the LC in RT and couldn't find it.
It's the sable version vray_adv_30007_max2014_x64_24736, I haven't got the nightly though.
That might be the issue, I will ask to have access to the nightly if possible.

                      Thanks

It hasn't been ported to stable versions yet - please check for updates regularly.

this is amazing news . this is something i believe will really improve RTGPU's path to production workflow we are all looking for in max.
