  • Anyone using 2.93GHz Six-Core X5670 CPUs?

Are these any good for vray rendering? I know they aren't the latest, but are they still strong CPUs (compared to say a single i7)?
    Kind Regards,

I am interested in this as well. With the amount of refurbished servers on Ebay the cost/performance ratio seems really good for some of the dual Xeon servers.

dual Xeon E5-2687W v2 24,674 scores on passmark
      dual x5670 scores 13,040
      single i7 4930k scores 13,198
      single i7 4790k scores 11,149
      single 3770k scores 9,644

that doesn't relate directly to vray but gives you a rough idea of cpu performance

Yes - I discovered the passmark site and compared a few CPUs. Some of these XEONs that I'm seeing on Ebay (as part of reconditioned blades etc) aren't actually that quick are they? Mmm...thanks for your posts

Looks like these are the CPUs to get: Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 @ 2.70GHz

        (£1M each though probably!)
        Kind Regards,

              There're about £2000 each.

If you're looking for a new workstation in the UK you could try the ridiculously named Banana Computers. I bought a Dual Xeon E5 2687W v2 with a Quadro K5000 and 32Gb for £3480. The processors alone were worth more than that.

I'm using two HP Z800's running dual Six-Core X5670...pretty solid machines.

I bought one of these, however mine is the spec I listed above.

It's a fairly decent tower and it's much quieter than my last one.

If you are serious about buying one give them a call.

Yep, mine's a dual cpu. As I understand it Dell build thousands of PCs a year all made to order. If a customer cancels or there is a problem with the order then they go through Dell's Outlet channel. To quote from the site:
DELL Factory Remanufactured : Dell take all of their returned stock (often as a result of salesman error) then rigorously re-test and refurbish it, allowing us to offer it to you at greatly reduced prices. All such systems also come with a full Dell warranty for complete peace of mind.
The workstation I posted above apparently has an RRP of £6369 so mine must have been more like £7500 and it still comes with a 3 year on site warranty.
