Ok sorry yes 2695v2 are around 650$CAD more for each cpu. They have 12 cores instead of 10 but at 2.4 GHz instead of 2.8.

Before buying my cpu I took a look at that chart and I don't remember exactly how was the numbers when I bought it but it seemed like the best buy for me at the time.

I checked those too before buying and based my decision on the fact that a lot of people say: more cores are better than less at higher frequency, this might prove this theory wrong.

They are better for rendering, but are worse for artist workstation work.

Let me put it this way

Saving scene on 2.4 ghz = 30 seconds
Saving scen on 4.4 ghz = 15 seconds.

You save 30-50% + Time on faster mghz core than if you had 10 more cores.

So it depends. If you buy it for render or for work.

Is there any reason not to use embree all the time? We always have it on and it hasn't caused any problems so far

For the latest V-Ray versions the Embree raycaster is enabled by default. It can be used to accelerate the rendering of simple triangle meshes, Hair systems like Ornatrix and Hairfarm, proxy objects, e.t.c.
For things not supported by the Embree raycaster, the V-Ray one will be used instead.

This "old-technology" machine (socket 1366) performs pretty much simillar to i7 5960x ... and this is what I expected
