          • Nice thread. I made the mistake of buying a 5960x....

For my home computer when my work computer is an old Xeon 1290.

It is painful coming to work every single day now lol.

                  Sure, David.

The Mobo is a ASUS X-99 Deluxe
                  Intel Core i7 5960x 3.0 Ghz
(OCed to 3.75 Ghz using the Performance Wizard in the BIOS. I'll be taking it higher in the near future)

In the ~3200$US range at Fry's. Put it together in a couple of hours - very easy build - booted perfectly first try and stable ever since.

Threw in my two trusty GTX580s with room for a couple of 780TIs down the road...

Let me know if you need any more info...

                        Three Warnings:
                        - Subpixel color mapping is on: rendered result may have incorrect brightness.
                        - Camera matrix is not orthonomal and 'Max-compatible ShadeContext' is ON
                        - Standard materials and lights may shade incorrectly

So if I have about $1500 - $2K to play with, What are some good options?
                        Xeon? i7?
I have the same processor and graphics card, 12G ram, but vray v3.2- and my rendertime is 7minutes- so first thing You should do is upgrade vray.
You wont have 2 minutes rendertime with 5960x and old version of vray.

Correct. Just by upgrading to V3.2, my time is now 6min, 37sec., which is a 45% speed increase over V2.4. So if anyone is looking for increased efficiencies, definitely start with the latest version of VRay. Well worth the upgrade. Now to save my pennies to upgrade a 5yr old system...

Weird that I was slightly faster with that setup except using an older 3930k @ only 3.2ghz and Win7

Did you have stuff running in background or anything?

                              • @3LP, Hehe made the same list a few weeks ago. Have to note you have doubled the actual physical cores in each CPU though, the numbers you list are the number of threads each unit has. Comparative ratios are still all the same of course though .
