  • My new 980s SLI

Hey guy, thanks in advance for reading this. I recently upgraded from a gtx 780 to 2 980 SLI, and was hoping to see a dramatic difference. Is there a way to see if vray rt is recognizing both cards?

    Thanks!

If it's recognized by windows, chances it will be by vray.
You can always check before render with the opencl selector or Vray to see what is enable in the render or not :
    "C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\RT for 3ds Max 2014 for x64\bin\ocldeviceselect.exe"
I know it says OpenCL but it's a legacy name from the time where OpenCL only was supported, it does manage cuda as well now.

For further refinement of benchmark, I advice you to look at this chart as it gives a good comprehension of the CG on the marks right now :

Scale is pretty much linear with CG.
For you, I would say you will complete the benchmark in about ~1m15s with a dual GTX 980.

Disable the SLI though, nor max nor RT does have any use of it, that technology is only useful for games and can make more issues than anything for any other usage.

Thanks Stan!! I thought SLI just meant the connection of the two. Very good to know!

          You're welcome.

He might have bought those two 980 few weeks ago, the same way I bought three 970 two months ago.

              Ah haaaa
              Do you think it's possible?
              Might think about that
Anyway, I've got more power with 3 of those for the same money, only I've got 4Gb of ram, who is already enough for most of my stuff.

Yea I bought them like 2 weeks ago... and seeing the Titan X come out makes me feel like snapping my elbows in the opposite direction. My situation is a bit different though. I'm currently in Brazil and the cost is TWO TIMES as much, while also being late to the market. I got kind of f(!#ed but the 980s are still pretty good haha.

In the future I might actually put the 980s in my dual xeon render slave, and get 2 titans X for my main rig.
