  • Vray.exe crashing, leaving Max hanging

We've noticed that on occasions when vray.exe crashes, the max rendering progress seems to sit waiting, seemingly unaware that anything has gone awry.

This is problematic on network jobs were if vray.exe crashes, Max sits waiting and Deadline doesn't know the task has failed.

Is there anyway to monitor (either through vray or deadline) the external process and terminate/fail the render task when it crashes?

    Hi Matt,

Would you please provide us with more information about this issue ? We need as much details as possible in order to replicate the problem here.
You are rendering V-Ray RT/GPU set as production render engine via Deadline, is that correct?
What are the exact versions you are using ?
If the issue related to a specific scene file, please send it to our support mail.

And Last question: Are there any warnings or errors in the Deadline console ?

Next time I come across the problem I'll try and send over a file, but it was more a general observation; the Vray.exe process does crash from time to time (typically with a Windows 'Vray.exe has encountered an error' message), but then it's like max is unaware the communication is severed. I've had this when using RT GPU as an active shade, production renderer locally and production render through deadline. It's more problematic through deadline, because no error is detected, I guess max is waiting for data from vray.exe? I don't know if it would time out eventually?

As a point in case, if you force close Vray.exe when it's rendering, no error occurs in max...

        Hello,

Our developers are aware of this issue and the solution should be available in the future releases.

This is exactly what is happening. V-Ray RT (console) sends a message: "render complete", to 3DS Max at the end of each render session. Unfortunately this is not happen when an error occurs during the rendering and leads to the problems you've reported.

We will try to update the thread when we have any news on this matter.
