  • Titan Z or Titan X?

We have little experience in VRayRT GPU. Which would you go for (ignoring cost differences) - the Titan Z or the Titan X?
    Kind Regards,

Just a reminder - Titan Z is dual GPU, so it has 6GB of usable RAM. Titan X has 12GB. Z should be faster, but I haven't tested it.

Yes - I am aware of that, but was interested to know what people would prefer having these facts in mind. If they were both the same memory, there would be no question: you would go for the Titan Z. The question boils down to a Titan X with 3000 cores and 12GB memory or a Titan Z with 6000 cores and 6GB memory.

      Which?
      Kind Regards,

        Well,
If you have two PCI 16x slots available, go for the X.
Two X are a bit faster than one Z for a bit less $ but with twice the memory.

So if you have the slots available, go for the X, definitely.
If price is a issue, then wait another few months and the 980 Ti should be around with with the same speed as the X and only 6Gb for half the price.

          Richard,

Did you make your purchase decision yet?

I am considering investing in the Titan X as more onboard memory will give more flexibility for heavier scenes and hopefully get more use over time as a result.

So I was wondering if you had tested either of these cards yet?

          Many thanks,

We got the Titan Z cards. As predicted, we haven't had huge opportunity to test yet. I know we have had a few crashes with the scene we were trying it on. Its a frustrating situation. We really do want to use RT but hit problems so quickly with unsupported features that it is difficult to sink the time into R&D.

(having said that, with something as simple as the test scene that has been floating around, they are fast)
            Kind Regards,

It will be helpful to tell us which features you need and were missing in the RT GPU engine. Or if it is just a scene being render differently, you can share it and we will investigate (and fix) it.

What email address should we send test scenes for RT GPU to?

                  Richard,

                  Thanks for the quick reply.

Out of interest - are you using the titans for driving the max viewport as well as rendering?

I have read about (but not tested yet) using Quadro for viewport and Geforce/Titan for the rendering - have you tried that by any chance?

I've recently been doing some R&D with Quadro 4000s which I am hoping to upgrade to Titans which is why I asked about your experience.

Having looked at the V-Ray RT Supported Features list for GPU's, it seems quite good but I always seem to get different results when picking 'cuda' when using RT compared to a normal Vray CPU render.

I'm sure it's just some features that I typically use that aren't yet supported but need to pick through the max scene to find the ones that aren't compatible.

                  Blagovest Taskov -

In case it's helpful, my personal 'wish list ' for features to include in RT GPU (cuda) in order of preference would be:

                  Composite map
                  Vray overide material
                  Include/Exclude objects from lights
                  Vray lens effects
                  Displacement

In the new machines the titans are the only cards in the pc, so they are handling both.

For us, key features are multitexture (or similar) and bercontile (or similar)
                    Kind Regards,

FYI, Vray's lens effects are working in RT/GPU at the present...although they are buggy at the moment. I'm pretty sure Vlado said they'ed be fixed in the coming SP.

Thanks for the feedback. Knowing what is needed most helps us a lot.
Lens effects should work with the current release. If something is not working with them, please send bug report to our support guys.
Composite map & Displacement (and other stuff, like Output map for all textures, Subdivision, Anisotropy, Tex Baking, UDIM, bitmap crop & placement, improved performance, QMC and more) are coming with the next SP (it should be released in the near future).
We are currently working on Include/Exclude objects from lights .. I'll see what we can be done about override mtl, multi texture and bercontile (and I will try to update you when I have something regarding those) ...
For scenes that are not rendering correctly with RT GPU - you can send them to the support@chaosgroup.com (they usually answer faster), or directly to me - blagovest.taskov@chaosgroup.com.

Will these features come for both Max and Maya?

Yes (for Maya there is also added support for other procedurals like all kind of remaps, multiply/divide, setrange, temperature).

Thanks for your update Blagovest - and for sharing the email for RT support.

Great to hear that these wished for features will soon be included in the next SP - that will make the task of matching CPU and GPU renders much more streamlined.

Looking forward to getting my hands on the next release.
