  • upgrade i7 slaves or new xeon?

I have 2x old(ish) i7 980x based machines that i've given up on as they have never been reliable. Considering either buying a new motherboard, cpu, ram bundle for each of them and giving them another chance, or just binning/selling them and getting another xeon machine.

Any opinions? scan.co.uk do a 5960x bundle that works out at £1672 with 32gb ram.

I'm just a bit concerned about reliability as the old ones used to give me '3dsmax stopped working' crashes several times a week.

Thinking about trying it on one of them and seeing how it goes.. OR does anyone in London want to buy them off me?

    Ignore this. I'm selling them.

Selling them is the only option IMHO. Once you get to a point where stability becomes an issue, it's just not worth the effort other than doing a fresh install of windows. Beyond that, I typically just move on. Good choice!

Peter, I just built 5x i7 6 core render nodes and they are very reliable and very fast!
At the same time you can squeeze all of that render power in to 1 dual xeon machine then do it.
