Well, looking at my last render I guess I got rid of it! He-he, I guess I was too tired to remember to check after rendering. The offending objects were in a group and I think perhaps there were conflicting/redundant visibility keys on objects and the group. My last move before rendering was to remove all vis keys from both objects and groups, and then re-apply them just to the objects. And it worked so there you have it!
So...now that I've gotten some sleep(!)....I remember that the particular render I looked at last was a CPU non-RT render! So I have isolated the objects in the file below for you to see.
Just scrub the time bar while RT/GPU is running and you'll see that when the crane's visibility keys are at zero, there are remnants of the crane still rendering - in "thin air" as well as from the shadow when the building is there.
Managed to reproduce render artifacts with your file using the latest official version, but it seems to work fine with the V-Ray 3 nightly builds.
I'm going to check now whether the fix will be included to the next SP.
Update: Yes, it will be better with the next SP release.
