  • Distributed Rendering

Now for some probably dumb questions.
    1. I have 2 computers working for distributed rendering, the transfer of data I think is rather slow, would it make sense to buy a new faster Router, and upgrade the main computer with an SSD drive?
    2. Currently we have a download speed of about 6mbps...the local broadband is going to speed up to I think 30mbps in June, will this affect the choice of router?
3.Currently my main computer has a GTX 680 with I think 3.7GB of RAM, I am considering purchasing a new computer with GTX 980 with probably 8GB.
Would the GTX 980 work ok with vray?
Does does distributed rendering work with RT? ie can I use the graphics cards in both computers?

If you are on 10baseT then changing out to a gigabit router or switch would make a noticeable difference, and an SSD would as well if you are using large scenes but the router would make the most difference.

This shouldn't affect the choice in router, although I think most cable or DSL modems come with gigabit Ethernet these days.

I currently run an Asus GTX980 and LOVE it.

Yes you can, Ive successfully used my GTX980 on my main WS and dual 780GTX's on my slave and RT works very well with them for DR.

Thanks Syclone for the prompt response...You say yes to this question: "Does does distributed rendering work with RT? ie can I use the graphics cards in both computers?"....but I am using Sketchup, will this work for me? I see I have accidentally posted this in the 3ds max section.

Unfortunately I only use 3dsmax but I have successfully used RT with DR that way and it worked great, I would check the help documents to see if this is supported in V-Ray for Sketchup at

        http://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/V...SketchUp+Help#

Or email Chaos support as they will most likely get back to you very quickly.

Thanks, I see on the Chaos site in the Sketchup section:"When using V-Ray RT and Distributed Rendering you must disable localhost or 127.0.0.1 from your distributed rendering servers."
so its seems you can use DR with RT.
