  • Matte Surface alternative

    Hello,
We used to use the Matte Surface attribute in VRayMtlWrapper on CPU a lot here for knocking out transparency to PNG sequences. While MtlWrapper doesn't work on GPU - is there an alternative we're missing here just for the Matte Surface function ?

We can do it with Multimattes of course in post, but with the sheer amount of passes we comp it would be nice to be able to use the png sequences as we used to for simplicity.

    (Maya 2016 RT GPU)

Do you need the shadow catching functionality, or just plain mattes will work too? The second option is a lot easier to do. Shadow catching is possible, and is on the "to do" list, but will take a while.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

I'd say the pure matte option is used 95% of the time (in our workflow), the shadow catching is super useful of course, but used much more seldom.

I would love to see something workable soon! I have to use the VRayMtlWrapper on CPU for my production work. RT GPU would be absolutely perfect for product shots we I have to knock out the transparency.

          Hello,

any updates or workarounds for the VRayMtlWrapper Matte Surface attribute on GPU? perhaps in the upcoming SP3? I mainly use an HDRI in a dome light to knock out the background.

We are still working on it. Unfortunately we can not provide an ETA for its implementation. As a workaround you can achieve this effect with use Multimatte render elements in post as ricoholmes mentioned.

Thanks Zdravko could you explain how to use the Multimatte render elements in post?

              I would appreciate it!

              Thanks!

This might depend on what exactly you wan to achieve but generally what I had in mind was to use the MultiMatte render element in post as a mask for the area/object that you want to see through, instead of matte surface. But it will require more work.

Thanks!...I will give it a try. I basically want to see through the ground plane and preserve shadows and reflections as in the attached example.

Anything? This is the only feature holding me back to go full on GPU for white studio renderings.

Will get to that a bit later.

Awesome Vlado! I would love that, and I'm sure other would too. RT GPU seems to really shine with "studio" product scenes.
