Is ATI a good card with V-Ray?
I seem to only hear about Nvidia on the forum lately, but I recently got a quote for a system with a 4GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon R9 270X.
Should I try it, or stick with Nvidia? Thoughts?

    Thanks a lot!

Save your self problems and headache. Use Nvidia......ati worked with some cuda or opencl or something but it wasn't stable or something like that. Nvidia at least you can pay with it.

If you intend to play with GPU rendering, then best to go with nVidia.

Thanks guys, that was my suspicion. I'll need to be able to use RT and eventually GPU for an in-house viz job I picked up.
My current WS has a Quadro 600 (I know, too old!) but it's not bad usually.
Can anyone give a few suggestions for an Nvidia card?
Was considering a K4200 or even a GeForce...

        Thanks again, James

You can check the benchmarks done with V-Ray RT GPU CUDA using different nVidia GPUs here : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...A0k/edit#gid=0

Right now, my go to card is the Titan X. 12GB of memory and doesn't carry the pricetag of the Quadro 5200. You could also go with a GTX 980 but you will be only getting have the RAM @ 6GB and not all of that is fully utilized in the traditional sense.

Saying all of that...I still prefer my Quadro K5200 for viewport performance in max with our large jobs. Nothing can touch it! NOTHING! Not even the Titan X. The Titan X is great for those huge scenes with many gigs of XRef data for GPU stuff (VrayRT and Octane and Bunkspeed). Anyways, that's just my 10 cents.
