  • Component recommendation request for new build

    My current build:

    - i7 2600
    - Gigabyte Z68X-UD5-B3
    - maxed out at 32 GB DDR3 RAM
    -Quadro K5000

I'm looking to convert this machine into a distributed renderer and build a new primary machine from scratch to connect to it. I use V-Ray for large single frame scenes (7k pixels and higher) that incorporate heavy geometry of several million polys with sss, hair and fur, particles, etc. No animation. I don't use V-Ray RT very much, but maybe I would more if I could get better performance out of it. My priorities are primarily speed in rendering. And since I don't play games at all, this will be 100% workstation. I use Max, V-Ray, RealFlow, Krakatoa, ZBrush, Nuke, Photoshop, and I just bought Octane this morning.

My budget is around $8-9k (though I don't want to spend that much if I don't have to)

I'm looking at the i7 5960X and the GTX 980 ti and would like to get at least 64 GB of RAM. (Would this mean that I'd have to have 64 GB in the other machine as well?)

    Questions:

    - What would be a good motherboard for this kind of setup? What kinds of things should I look for in a MB?
    - Power supply? (Also, I'm in the U.S. right now, but will be using this system in Ireland. Would the difference in current impact the power supply or the system in any way?)
    - What type of RAM would be good?
    - What would be the benefits of having a dual processor MB with 2x i7 5960Xs? How about 2x GTX 980 tis? And would these benefits be worth the extra cost?
    - Recommended cooling system?

Thanks in advance. It's great to have such a knowledgable group to refer to!
