  • 5960 vs 4790k

I have a vendor making a quote for us, and wanted to confirm something with the forum

Looking at an overclocked i7 4790k compared to a 5960. Our IT guy is saying the 5960 is triple the cost for just a 15% performance gain.
I don't know, or have extra time to research much, but does that sound correct?

    Thanks in advance

Yeah he's probably right. Core per core power is almost same with some small differences. I'm not experienced with new i7's but deriving from other cpus like xeon x5650 for example and e5-2680v3, the core per core speed during rendering is nearly same.

What might be better is single thread ops inside the actual software.

However, I try to always get the newest hottest shit, just because I build a system every 6-7 years so it better last me that long till new one. No point in getting something in the middle. That's strictly IMO

      Great point, I agree. Thanks!

...And don't forget, the triple cost stat is only for the CPU, not the whole machine!

Always good to maximize your cores when you are working with software that takes full advantage of multi-threading like Vray.

        Newest, hottest...in this case, yeah...

Mostly true but isn't the MB and memory more expensive (i.e., X99 MB, DDR 4 RAM, etc.) for the 5960? It can add a bit to the cost as well.

Keep in mind your're comparing 4 cores vs 8 cores. So just by calculating the overall computing performance the difference is somewhat like 4*4.0GHz = 16GHz on the 4790K vs 8*3.2GHz = 25.6GHz on the 5960x.

don't forget you can easily overclock the 5960x to 4-4.2GHz.

not sure if any of this helps

it seems to be more than 15% gain
