  • Impressed with MSI Laptop

I just recently picked up a new laptop replacing my old MacbookPro and went back to PC as Mac was just way over priced for what they are offering. I did a little research and settled on the MSI GS70 Stealth Pro 17" and its surprisingly light and thin for a 17" and the viewport and rendering performance are quite good and surpassed my expectations. I havent tried V-Ray RT on it yet but plan to soon when I get some time to test.

Here is a link to the info page for anyone interested. http://ca.msi.com/product/notebook/G...#hero-overview

I too am so underwhelmed with my MacBook Pro. I got the 2014 MB with the 27" Thunderbolt display. I find myself using my MB as a Chromebook and I rarely use the TB display. It took me 2 months to get the TB to work; I had to do things in a certain order, which I had to figure out on my own since Apple thinks that their products are flawless. Yesterday, I noticed a large gray smudge burnt into the TB display and I found out that it is due to high humidity. Now, my Apple Watch is simply awesome!

I'll look at the MSI. My last laptop was an MSI and it was nothing but a headache.

Yea my main reason for going with the MSI one was the anti glare screen and internal components like three M.2 SATA drives and a 1TB SSD (already swapped out the regular 7200rpm drive lol) but so far its been great *knock on wood* I think a lot of machines these days are like buying cars, 80% of the internal parts are made by only a few manufacturers which they all use so its kind of hit and miss, I just didnt want to spend $3000 on a new mackbook that was actually slower than the $2000 MSI I was running and I have the option to swap out drives and ram if I want to as they are not soldered in like the RAM in the 2014 and newer Mac's. I still like my old MBP as with a good SSD inside it really flies but I needed something a little faster

I'm waiting to see how the Surface Pro 4 looks. By all accounts it could end up being a rather nice mid-power laptop and tablet replacement. I do hope the rumours about a 14" version are true.

Me too, on the Surface 4. I have a Surface Pro 3 on loan from the office and it's a nice piece of kit when out and about! So much more functional than either of my tablets (Samsung Galaxy Tab and iPad). Hoping for the bigger version too...if even a little more would still be worth it for size, weight and capabilities.

I looked at the surface pro's but I already have an iPad and was looking for something with descent horsepower as a mobile workstation. I would have loved to get one of the boxxtech laptops but with the US/CDN exchange rate and duty it prob would have cost me almost double.

I had one of the bad boy Boxx laptops back in the day and it was sooo damned heavy that I NEVER wanted to move it! It totally defeated the purpose of a laptop. I was always tethered to a power outlet. In short, it was powerful, but was a pain to move around. My current iPad I was given was close to almost $800US! That is almost the same price as the Surface Pro 3 I used. Surface is far superior for everything I need to use it for! My problem with the high power laptops is that by they time you get a nice once, you are easily in the $2500-$3000US and for that price I could build a killer workstation and be better all around. I had a hard time giving up the Surface when I got back to the office! LOL

I purchased a Macbook Pro Retina so I could remote into my home office when on the road. I was using a Chromebook, which worked, but the display was poor. Now, with my Verizon MIFI 4G, I can remote in and work. I was on vacation last week and it worked great! I saw little to no delay over the MIFI and the retina displays a clean image. I was reading about 5G, which would basically eliminate the need for wired internet.

I hear ya on the weight issue, my office had gotten me an HP mobile workstation and at the time it had nice power but like you mentioned it weighed a Ton and was bulky. This was my reasoning before for going to a MacBookPro as they were relatively powerful and were light enough for travel. The Boxx ones I was looking at were their thin line that they recently came out with as I knew the real mobile workstations would be tanks and with a buggered back and shoulder there is no way I was going to haul one of those around lol. The decision to get the MSI one that I did was largely based on its internal components that would handle rendering smaller jobs on the road and for my photography and graphic design as well but what surprised me was its just under 6lbs which is not much heavier than the 15" MBP that I have.

So far Im still impressed and happy with the GS70, Ive been rendering on it, editing photos, videos and doing some graphic design on it and its performed very well and at times better than I had expected.

That's just showing that you can change the LEDs on the keyboard to just about anything you want...including rainbow colors!

Every keys color is individually programmable...

Actually no, you cant change the colours of the individual keys, its split in to thirds but you have the option to change them all to the same colour or different colours for each third or animate the colours. I have them all set to red or white most of the time in the same utility you can remap the individual keys to do anything you want.
