  • Titan X cooling

    Hi all - Does anyone have experience with the temperatures on a standard EVGA (or similar) stock cooling setup for a Titan X while using VRay RT? I see reports of people gaming with them and hitting 85C so I'd assume using them for rendering would result in throttling without an aftermarket fan cooler or watercooling setup.

    Unfortunately the Titan X Hybrid (closed loop EVGA watercooling system) seems sold out everywhere. I found a decent dual fan air cooler but gamers reported that only dropping it to 80C...I could do a custom waterblock but that starts to mean real $$$.

    Anyway - would appreciate user feedback if anyone has experience with this!

    in my limited experience (ive had a watercooled titan x for a few days) gaming and benchmarking seem to heat the card up more than rendering. its hrd to tell from my temps, as they remain pretty static between 32 and 34 degrees under all loads (its a big watercooling system) however i can see that furmark and 3dmark both reach the tdp limit on my card and throttle, but rt gpu only loads it up to 85% max tdp.

    i didnt spend any time with the stock cooler attached, but i think you will be fine with the stock one.

      EVGA Titan X Superclock will run at 83c while rendering, but you use the EVGA Precision X utility to make the fan curve higher, so run fan faster at higher loads. Fan makes a little more noise (fine to me), but the max temps I'm seeing now is 65c give or take.

        The Titan X is programmed to stay stable at 83C, only when going over this temperature it will seriously begin cooling with its fan. This is done for gamers as they typically want their GPU to remain silent as long as possible, as Donfarese said you can use utilities to set up a custom fan profile, and make the fan start working hard at any temperature you'd like. If you are worried about your card though, I would recommend installing GPU-z, which monitors alot of variables in the card including fan usage. I'm personally only seeing 40% fan usage at 83 degrees for example.

          Wow this is great info, thanks all. We decided to give the stock cooling option a shot and just slide it into my machine before we build an entire render node for 2-3 cards. I'll be curious how it compares to my GTX 580 at home (which is watercooled) both for speed and temps. I'd definitely live with 65-75. 85 makes me a bit nervous for long term use...

            We've got 4 in one pc at the moment, and the temps hit 80+ while using RT. But the fans are only running 30ish%, Ive tested forcing the fans to run higher and even turning them up to around 50% the temps drop by a good 10 degrees.
            Im not sure of the implications of forcing the fans to run faster though, would assume its fine?

              I'd think it's fine. It might shorten the lifespan of the fans a little bit, but unless you are running the rig 24/7 at 100% I wouldn't expect a failure unless one of the fans is sub-quality anyway. You make me curious though, want kind of case are you using and with what fans to supply the Titan's with fresh air? Putting 4 close together in a case can really reduce airflow as the top cards intakes get blocked by the card underneath. Do you have side fans blow air directly onto the Titan's?

                We are running 4 of those as well, but when I render I tent to push the fans at max speed, and it keeps the gpu around 35 degrees with OC.
                We have a open build though so no case around, and it's in a server room so no issue with noise.

                  Just stock cards, no additions or amendments.

                  Currently sitting in a normal tower case. But have got a new one coming today to test out, some Corsair tower.
