Could RT get a "use local host" box like in production?. it would be nice to have an easy toggle button and not have to close max.

Not sure what you mean - there is an option already and you don't need to close Max to get it to work?

I mean to only use the render node and not the local machine.

Yes, that's the "auto-start local slave" option, which in the new builds is renamed to "use local machine".
