  • Workstation Budget planning 2016

    Hy!

i would like to upgrade my workstation in 2016, so i want to make a view considerations about the new system and the availible budget.
I'am doing mainly arch-viz (vray, much forest pro) but also some cad work.

    my current setup:
    win 7 ultimate
    Z68X-UD4-B3 Mainboard
    i7 2600k 4c/8t @ 4.4Ghz
    32GB DDR3 Ram 1333Mhz
    GTX 780ti 3GB

    planned setup:
    win 10
    MSI X99A SLI Plus
    i7 6950x 10c/20t (release Q2 ~1200€)
    HyperX Fury 64GB 8x8gb
Palit GTX 980ti super jetstream 6Gb (option: GTX Titan X)
    Dark power pro 850

    Setup is about 3100€ (3500€)

    1. How you guys doing with win10?
    2. Is there a need for a Titan X (for forest scenes)?
    3. maybe the i7 6950x will be replaced with i7 6900K we will see prices and further specs soon.
    4. is there any point to go with a dual xeon setup?

    greets phil

i would go with a bigger power supply...
maybe you update your rig with a second GPU...
GPU rendering is comming closer and i wont be surpriced if chaos has something up their sleeves...

yeah you're right i think i will switch this to 1000w so it can handle two 980ti's
      thanks for the hint
      maybe someone found this useful

a more advanced psu calculator if you are a stickler for detail..

            Hy Bobby,

here is a list with two possible setups.
Maybe the 6950x is only 1000€... there are only rumors so i go with 1200€ (always better to plan more, you can see the impact now on the oculus
            Prices are from Austria.
Cant wait to build up such a rig!

I was tired of waiting till the release of the i7 6950x!
So i made a little chart for the decision about a the cpu for my new workstation!
Very interessting results, best option for the budget is the new E5-2640 v4! Only 500€ more than the i7 6950x and nearly twice the power.
              Maybe it'll help somebody.

                Some points regarding your calculation...
You can't multiply the single core turbo to get the combined GHz. The all core turbo is always lower - sometimes much lower like for the 2640 v4 with 2.6GHz.
                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...l-processor.29
Hyperthreading normally adds maybe 20-30%, so doubling the threads is not really helpful. And because all bigger intel CPUs use HT you can simply exclude it from the calculation.
And i think Passmark is not the best tool to measure rendering performance. I have seen completely different results in the past when i compared the values to rendering benchmarks.

Thanks for your info, didn't mention that!
i updated the chart with the right calculation for the stepping.
                  i also made an graph.
One thing is very interessting, the E5-2620 v4 has a higher ratings than the 6950x an the dual setup is also 600€ cheaper!
