I wasn't in the market for a new card, until now, because I am having issues running a 4K monitor. My current card is a NVIDIA GTX 970 and MAX is not usable, unless I scale everything up 200% (Windows Scaling), which looks awful. Someone on another forum recommends the SAPPHIRE NITRO Radeon R9 390 DirectX 12 100382NTOC-2L 8GB 512-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814202164

Any opinions with this card? For the price, it seems to be a steal.

I don't think the scaling issue is related to your video card. Autodesk hasn't bothered to make Max properly scaleable for two versions since hi res displays came out. The options seem to be reading glasses (which do help a lot after you get used to them) or setting the resolution of your 4K monitor back to HD-ish.

I am still not sold on extreme high res monitors. I like to be able to see the pixels. I know that may sound silly, but for instance viewing a 1080p image on 4K at anything other than the (physically) small 1:1 pixels is going to involve some scaling, which will give you a false representation of your image.

Some are saying when they got a better video card things worked and others are just complaining about the scaling issue. The scaling issue is AutoDesk, but the lagging seems not to be a MAX issue. 3DS MAX at 100% scaling is ridiculous and Autodesk needs to me ashamed. When 100%, the icons are literally to small too see. MAX lags and the mouse jerks at anything less than 200%. When scaling is 150%, things are beautiful and I could deal with MAX's small icons, but again, MAX does not function at anything less that 200%

Interesting. This lag occurs when you set the scaling to something other than 100%? Or other than 200%? I will try this on my SurfaceBook, which has a high res screen that is not big by our standards. Some type scales somewhat with the windows settings, but some of it does not scale at all. I finally just got +1.5 reading glasses for it. Since it is a laptop, and not something I use Max on a ton this works out.

Most apps scale properly, though some other ones do not. The awesome free Open Source RAM player DJVView does not scale properly either, sadly. Fusion, SynthEyes, Adobe apps, all seem to work fine, though.

If I scale to 200% it worked. Now, with Direct 3D, it also works.

What do you mean with Direct 3d? You mean disabling Nitrous and going to the legacy Direct3D driver in the prefs?

How does that differ (I mean in terms of scaling)?

Yes. I went from Nitrous to Direct 3D and I don't get that 7 second lag. It doesn't help the scaling, however, this did a little:

Did you try the manifest trick with Max? What happened? Did the interface get more legible?

Yes, it made the icons a little larger. I had two issues, both caused by Autodesk not making 3DS Max 4k compliant. The small icons will effect everyone with a high resolution screen and the lag seems to be effecting some. For me, scaling to 200% solved both. Having said that, it is a pain to have to set the scaling every time I launch MAX and set it back when I am done. Even though it does work when scaled to 200%, it looks bad and shows poor planning on Autodesk's part. I read a long post on another forum about Autodesk releasing 4K in 3DS MAX 2017, but only for subscribers. Basically, they are going to play the Adobe game and treat their subscribers really good, at least until everyone is on subscription. I really felt helpless for awhile, because there really isn't any plan b. It is not like I can dump Autodesk and use someone else. At some point isn't it a monopoly?

Sorry to hear your issue, if I knew you'd buy a 4k screen, I would have recommended to by a 34' in stead.
At this time, way better solution IMO. You keep the same UI as with a 1440p but have extra room on the sides.
Recomanded it to a friend and he has never been more happy.

34" seems massive. This 28" seems to be a overkill. If I saw one in action maybe I would like it, however, we are limited here. I had to order the 28" 4K online because all I could find in our local stores are 24" monitors.
