  • Wacom Cintiq for 3ds max

Is it a good idea to use a wacom cintiq together with 3dsmax? I'm reading a lot of negatives but also a lot of positives. Anybody with experience? I've read all the threads about wacom here but they are quite old (3 years) so I was wondering if anything changed. Also is it maybe better to use one of these instead?: http://www.yiynova.com/En/index.php

I use an intuos with max. but not the cintiq.

I was forced to go tablet, after i couldn't use the mouse.

now i probably prefer it and wouldn't really want to go back (though i use mouse with left hand now). but it take a little while to get used to it. a lot longer than picking up photoshop with it.

main different is that you hand is constantly moving slightly vs with a mouse it much easier to keep it still. so using snaps well helps a lot.

but once you get used to it, you don't notice that anymore, and i think it probably speeds up work in max in the end.

but hardest thing is staying with it long enough for it to get easier.

intuos here as well, for everything (except tooltips, those are still a bit hard to make popup). much better than mouse imo. didn't take too long to get used to either

same here. have been using intuos for 8 years and could never go back to a mouse. you just have to tweak some windows stuff to get it working properly but after that it's great.

i guess with a cintiq you'd just have to get used to your hand blocking parts of the screen at times but you'd probably forget about it after a while.

Reason I'm doubting a bit is , with a cintiq I wouldn't have good access to my keyboard shortcuts anymore or my numpad for number input, or am I talking rubbish? I've seen a few attach a small keyboard with velcro to the cintiq or something but I don't see that working quite as good. Also I'm doubting between a touch or non touch. I see a lot of people having problems with it more than advantages, but that was a few years ago (2-3). But I hear the support of Wacom is just plain terrible. Too bad, but they're not all chaosgroup I guess .

I would also use a ergotron arm with the cintiq as it seems easier to get out of your way.

Another thing I'm not sure about is, I'm working on a muti monitor setup, a lot of dialogs are on a different monitor, how easy is it to switch to another monitor? Does the monitor swith to the wacom or do you control the cursor on your other monitor.

So if anyone was wondering. I bought the wacom 27 QHD and I love it so far. Testdriving it in 3dsmax as we speak, it takes a little getting use to and I need to position my keyboard way to the side, but I'll find a solution (ergotron or something). So far so good.
