  • Bootcamp / Vray /3ds Max

    Hi All,

I am trying to get feedback on running 3ds max /Vray on bootcamp. My office has 3 new super duper mac pro that just sit idle in the evenings. I am trying to convince them to load up max and vray so I can use them to render.

Anyone have any experience with doing that? Is it worth doing, how are the render times? The tech guys in the office are telling me that its not worth it because it make the mac to slow.

    Any info would be helpful.

    Thanks!
    Cheers

Well sure that is worth it, Bootcamp ist essentially just a set of Windows drivers for the Mac hardware components. Windows is installed in parallel as a secon OS (so you will need space on the harddrives and Windows licenses). From that point those Macs will then run like any other Intel-PC. There is nothing slow about it. However, you ofcourse would have to shutdown OSX and then restart into Windows. Restarting the system at a particular time can probably be automated if needed.

It sounds more like your tech guys spoke of installing Windows in a virtual machine (e.g. using Parallels). This way Windows runs while Mac OSX is used. This approach is conveneient if you need Mac + PC softwre at the same system, but will slow things down.

Maybe you can get your tech guys to do both variants and then you can compare which approach better fits yous and your coworkers needs.

      Thanks Daniel

Yes I think they are confused a little.

I will plead my case again.

      Thanks!

You should have little or no issues installing Max and V-Ray in Bootcamp, I ran those on my MacBook Pro for a couple years with little or no problems at all and rendering was fine and just as fast as a comparable PC.

I've done via Bootcamp on a Macbook Pro it worked well just like a windows machine, in fact it worked so well that I ditched OSX altogether and stuck with windows since I never booted into osx anymore.
