  • Specing new system

I'm putting together a parts list for a new system. I am a solo freelance arch viz person. Exteriors and Interiors. Stills only no animation.

I'm trying to put together a good high end workstation but a step below "Bleeding Edge". Most bang for buck. Processor, video card, mother board and power supply are primary components I am seeking advice on.

I'm not currently using Vray RT but I'm thinking to get a mother board that I could add video cards to if I adopt the RT workflow in the future.

Here is my list so far:

    Thanks for any help!

I would seriously look at the i7-6950X, those extra cores are what it's all about in a workstation. Cut back elsewhere, not the cpu. I think buying the higher bin parts are more cost effective as you need to upgrade less frequently.

    Cheers,

not looked back since getting a dual 18 core xeon, 128gb ram xeon
it was expensive at time but the speed increases in rendering and multitasking pay for themselves

I find it painful to render at home on my i7 now

Thank you both for your help. Yikes those 18 core xeons are pricy. Rendering speed is my main goal. Maybe Dual 16 core xeons to keep price down.

Using 1 quad core on current system.

yep its certainly more exy than an i7 system. we got ex-demo Dells from a reseller from memory for our 18c machines but still with the warranties and next day replace service.
to keep costs down we went with 980ti rather than the as standard quadro spec.

If you are upgrading from a quad core you are going to feel some serious improvments in render speed and in turn how fast you can turn around renders. depends on your workload
