  • VRay Dongle Question...

Part 1: Is it possible to run the VRay server software on something like a a ReadyNAS storage server? (looking at NETGEAR ReadyNAS RN42400-100NES)
Part 2: Is it possible to upgrade a dongle to a cloud license model, to no longer need the dongle?

Reason: I don't really need more than a storage server, so I have a "server" machine which is only hosting the Vray dongle which seems like a waste of energy/bandwidth.

    Thoughts encouraged.

Regarding your first question, please see the answer below:
Our V-Ray license server software can be installed and running on a different OS platforms - Windows, Linux and Mac. In order for the dongle to be recognized and presented to a machine where some of the three OS resides and V-Ray license server is running,
you will need to be able to present this dongle in some of those three above mentioned OS. When the dongle is presented, a driver program should be installed in order for the dongle to be fully recognized from the OS and V-Ray license server.
The above mentioned solutions could also work by having a physical server that has all the USB devices(dongle) connected to it and runs a service that enables the USB devices to be accessed remotely over IP.
The OSs then run a piece of client software that connects to the USB device over IP, and it looks to the OS like a local USB device. There are many solutions available, you can see two mentioned below:

So please check if your device (NETGEAR ReadyNAS RN42400-100NES) could be used as the above mentioned.

    Regarding your second question:
We have V-Ray Online license server installation, which presents the V-Ray licenses online and there is no need of a dongle.
Online licensing (OLS) is currently available for new license purchases only, as our existing licensing system does not allow migration of licenses from dongles to OLS.
We are actively working on a fast and reliable license migration tool, which will be released in the middle of 2017.
