i7 vs Xeon?

Hi guys!

Currently, my workstation has a Xeon E5-1650 V4 (3.6Ghz) cpu. In our company we are getting new workstations from Boxx, which have Intel i7 7700k (4.2Ghz overclocked up to 4.8Ghz) inside.
For progressive rendering or local rendering only, should I keep my Xeon which is slower but has 4 more cores (6+6) or get the new i7 with less cores (4+4) but faster? Which one would work best with Vray? Suggestions?

I am asking for local rendering only as per final production we use our internal render farmer.

You will be better off with faster cores in the i7.

Any particular reason? Won't the extra 4 core compensate the difference in clock speed?

its been discussed before in other threads where people contemplate what to get. But to sum this up is, a single higher clocked core is better then several lower clock cores. Besides rendering, a lot of process are single threaded (use single core) so day to day things are faster with i7. You also have to look at the sum of Ghz, so your xeon totals to 21.6 Ghz, while i7 19.2 Ghz as you can see the difference is small, but per core i7 would most definitely outperform xeon. This is of course strictly my opinion

Thank you both guys for the replies. Dmitry i agree with you and will get the i7.
Gavin, I also just checked the Vray benchmark for those 2 CPUs. Almost the same, no real winner. The Xeon is slightly faster scoring 01:55, and the i7 around 02:00. I guess won't even notice in real life!

I think if you compare with single thread ops like I said before, for example applying a heavy deformer to a mesh, or simulating with particles or phoenix, where most of the time its less threads involved you will see a difference.

Yep, got it! Plus they are overclocked up to 4.8gz which is crazy fast.
