  • How is CPU RAM managed during animation with dynamic geometry.

    Hi,

Just doing a short animation with moving geometry and some displacement to try things out. I'am on a new build with a Rampage E 10 motherboard and a 6850k processor, I only have 16gb of RAM for now just for test purpose. The scene I render should be constant in VRAM use around 2-3gb VRAM is used. A quite light scene in general. My CPU RAM thought is peaking after I've rendered 50 images in a row.
If I close down Max and restart the render all is fine for about the same amount of frames. I know 16gb is very low, but my page file becomes 63.9gb then the render crashes due to no amount of ram availabel. So my question is what is stored in my ram and pagefile during my animation? Even if I've 128gb ram I think the problem will persist since I might work with more complex scenes then.

    Best Regards

    Karl

    Hello,

Most of the scene data is stored in the system RAM before the transfer to GPU. If your scene geometry doesn't increase during your animation the system RAM usage shouldn't increase too - so if it does there might be some bug. The easiest way to check this is if you could send us the scene?

    Best regards,

I am investigating the scene now and I noticed that the RT engine is set to CPU instead of GPU.
Would you please confirm which is the RT engine that should be used in order to replicate the issue here?

Thank you very much in advance.

It looks like the memory leak appears with CPU engine as well, it's still important however to know which one you are using.

          Hi!

Sorry yes I see when I opened my file now that I sent a file with standard RT CPU settings instead of my usual GPU settings, I was using Vray GPU when the problem occurred.

          Thanks for investigating the scene!

It's a memory leak bug, the case has been forwarded to our Dev Team for fixing.
Will let you know when we have some progress on the subject.
