15 gpu miner rig for rendering?

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if it would be possible to render with V-Ray using 15 GPU (half AMD/half Nvidia) with this rig (it is made for a motherboard made especially for mining cryto-currencies):

If I understand correctly, to make it possible for windows to recognize all of them we have to use half of AMD gpu and half nvidia (max gpu is 8 for windows). btw linux doesn't have this problem and can run 15 gpu of the same brand.

I know the V-Ray features set is different for AMD and Nvidia GPU with less features for AMD. but if we don't use those features would it work?

I just realized right now there is no Mobo with 15 GPU slots, the max is 13, so still huge.

We can also use a standard motherboard with expansion card allowing to plug 4 gpu in one slot!

Mixing AMD GPUs and NVIDIA GPUs will not work well (or at all).

Thanks Blago, That's what I was suspecting.... So my idea to buy AMD cards for mining and be able to use them too for my V-Ray rendering is falling apart... The AMD cards have a much better price/processing ratio for mining. Too bad I can't use them with geforce for rendering with V-Ray cause it would have help to pay for all these costly equipements.... Or maybe I can still buy AMD cards only and hope that one day openCL can become better for V-Ray.

Do you think opencl could become better within the next 3 years or do you already know it will never be as good as cuda?

Radeon-prorender claims to be better with AMD card. In fact it's made by AMD and it's open source. So I wonder if you could look at this open source code and understand what make it faster with amd cards? http://gpuopen.com/open-source-radeon-prorender/ BTW it also uses both cpu and gpu at the same time like v-ray now does too.

this whole mining crypto currency business, what is it all about? i ordered a new gpu and the price actually went up 60 euros more from last time and the explanation is because of mining of crypto currency, that is what the shop told me, i just shook my head and forgot to ask, was a crazy day

It's about people all around the world networking their hardware together to create a huge supercomputer to calculate everything it takes to make some new currencies working. To make a currency work you need a ledger and some cryptographic key to be calculated to secure the whole thing. Now there are more than a thousands of those new currencies. Speculators buy and sell them. And users create a peer to peer network for each currency to make them work without any central authority (in theory and to make it short).

This craze is a big factor in gpu price rising, but it may also be the fact that the new AMD cards were a huge deception for gamers as well as miners. So Nvidia postponed the release of newer cards and increased the price of the current ones. But I still saw some rebate with lower price, you have to look around.

Nvidia investors are making a lot of money out of this craze. Look at Nvidia stock market price since 3 years! iIt's ten times higher!

Hi Ramon, I will know it very soon. I was just able to plug and make windows recognize 6 Nvidia Zotac 1080 ti and i am waiting for 2 risers to come to add 2 more for a total of 8 on my Supermicro X9DR3-LNF4+ board. All plugged in a custom external case via risers connecting to my open workstation case via usb 3 cables.

As far as mining all 6 cards are mining at the max hasrate and I am about to try V-Ray benchamrk and some cuda IPR rendering with Vray.

I just started the vray benchmark GPU and I am at position 6 (with my 6 cards) without any optimization

(my pci-e ports are set to gen 1 with 4G enabled in the bios). I will try setting them back to gen 3. I put them to gen 1 to try to make windows recognize them but I change the g4 setting at the same time so I don't know which one helped. No overclocking neither.

jstrob Could you give some real world statistics, most importantly I'm interested in improvement from 4 cards to 6. You could deselect two of them in the GPU device rollout. There was talk that the benchmark might have a bug limiting the 4+ card performance. I was wondering if Vray proper was also seeing such a falloff in performance.

ProRender might be faster on AMD cards, but it is often slower than the standard V-Ray running on CPU...
