  • V-Ray RT GPU and Shadow-Catcher

I don't know if this is a MODO-only issue when working with the Shadow-Catcher and V-Ray RT GPU. The Shadow-Catcher is still visible in the render (ground plane in the image), It only disapperars when EIS is disabled, but beside the introduction of fireflies the shadows are completely off then.

    Hey, Volker

Thank you for the feedback. Well, you can easily achieve shadow catcher effect with V-Ray GPU without to disable the EIS.

    1. Assing Material to Shadow catcher.
    2. Put material above the Basic Shader.
    3. Add Shader to shadow catcher's material.
    2. Enable Matte Properties -> set Alpha Contribution value to - 1.0
    3. You need to set diffuse color to something close to Black (2,2,2) enable the reflection (254,254,254).
4.Next step to get a proper reflection we need to add a proper Refraction IOR - as for asphalt is 1.634.

How to get a nice soft shadow for outdoor

    1. Get the time and geographic location from EXIF data.
    2. Enable Physical Sun from Directional Light option ->
    3. Add V-Ray Sun/Sky to Directional light. If you do not use V-Ray Physical camera decrease the "Intensity Multiplier" to 0.05.
    4. Increase Size Multiplier to 20-50 for nice soft shadow.
